  1. Oviraptor
  2. TIME: Late Cretaceous
  3. LOCALITY: Asia (Mongolia)
  4. SIZE: 6 ft/1.8 m long
  5.
  6. There was a small, hornlike crest over the
  7. snout of the parrotlike head of Oviraptor.
  8. Its body, however, was typical of the small,
  9. flesh-eating coelurosaurs. There were 3
  10. grasping fingers on each hand, with strongly
  11. curved nails (each about 3 in/8 cm long). The
  12. animal walked upright on long, slender legs,
  13. each with 3 clawed toes. The body was
  14. balanced by the long, outstretched tail. The
  15. first specimen discovered in 1924 was found
  16. preserved with a clutch of eggs laid by the
  17. horned dinosaur Protoceratops, the inference
  18. being that the "egg thief" was overcome,
  19. maybe in a sudden sandstorm, while raiding
  20. the nest.
